An early site of Aboriginal campsites, where the Ngunawal tribe hunted on the rich plains and fished in the Molonglo River, from 1825 Pialligo became home to white settlers who stocked the land with sheep and cattle and planted lush vegetable gardens and orchards.   After the establishment of the National Capital in the early twentieth century, Pialligo became the kitchen garden of the growing city as vegetables, orchards, nurseries and fodder crops flourished.

Today, Canberra residents and visitors alike enjoy the scent of country life in view of Parliament House as they stroll the streets, visiting the orchards, vineyard, well-stocked nurseries, garden and gift centres, or relax in the many caf├ęs and restaurants.
